Limit Online Distractions During Study Time

Going to school online means that you can attend lectures, turn in homework and take tests wherever you have an internet connection. Ideally, you will study in a room by yourself without any distractions from your spouse, kids or friends. However, make sure that you limit digital distractions as well. This means turning off Facebook, not checking Twitter and using the internet only to do research for school.

Limit the Length of Each Study Session

You should never feel burned out by a study session. To keep yourself fresh, study no more than an hour at a time. After an hour has passed, you should grab a bite to eat, take a walk or do anything else that gets you off of the computer. Once you have cleared your head, you can go back to reading your textbook or that group discussion with your classmates before the test is due.

Don’t Be Afraid to Take Notes

There are a lot of technical terms and other dry language that you will encounter during your accounting program. Therefore, it may be in your best interest to take notes or use other strategies to put what you have read or listened to into your own words. If there is anything that you don’t understand or can’t put into your own words, you should make a note of it and ask your professor about it at the next available opportunity.

Create a Study Routine If Possible

Studying is a lot easier when there is a sense of routine about it. As part of your routine, you should study at the same time and in the same place as it will allow you to mentally prepare for what you are about to do. If you can’t dedicated a given time or don’t have a specific place to study, do your best to create as uniform an experience as you possibly can.

Don’t Forget to Account for Time Differences

If you have questions for your professor or for other classmates, you should take time differences into account if your program isn’t in your local area. You should also take this into account when determining when a quiz or paper may be due. For instance, if you are on the east coast and taking courses from a school out west, you would need to add three hours to any submission deadline. You may also have to wait an extra few hours to get a response to any questions posted online.

Going to school to get an online accounting degree is a significant investment of your time and money. Therefore, you need to make the most of it by studying hard and getting the best possible grades. If you can do that, you increase the odds of staying employed for as long as you want.
